Adamu Isah 1 ,Anne E. Omori 2 ,Institute of Education University of Calabar, Nigeria
    ABSTRACT
Paulo Freire was a famous Brazilian educationist who strongly advocated for an educational system that empowers the masses. He condemned what he termed as “banking concept of education”, where students/learners are treated as if they are nothing more than storage banks. They are provided with information which they store in their memories so that they might regurgitate the information at later date. This at the end produces students who are passive member of society, who can hardly withstand the challenges of global competitiveness. Therefore, this paper has made a theoretical attempt to discuss the Paulo Freire’s banking concept of education and the Nigerian university method of instructional delivery. The study adopts the descriptive research method. Data used in the study were mainly obtained from secondary sources, such as related books, web – sites, journals, conference papers and other texts. The paper exposed the “banking concept of education” and tertiary instructional method, pragmatising the contents and techniques of teaching and instructional delivery method using technology for relevance at the global scene. The paper finally recommends among others for the liberation of education to enable both youths and adults to tremendously explore their potentialities so as to believe in themselves, to think creatively and to be progressively productive

    ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study is to examine the challenges and attitude of teachers toward the implementation of Data Processing Curriculum in Secondary Schools in Ondo State of Nigeria. It is a survey research which employed a descriptive design. The sample for the study comprised of 200 teachers randomly selected from the ten secondary schools in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State. Twenty teachers were drawn from each school using purposive sampling technique giving a total of 200 respondents. A four likert- type of questionnaire was used as an instrument for the collection of data. A trial test was carried out to ascertain the reliability of the instrument using Cronbach alpha statistics technique and a value of 0.75 was obtained from the test. Two hundred copies of the questionnaire were administered in all the selected secondary schools. Mean was used to analyse and interpret the result obtained. Decision rule was based on the result of 2.5 and above as being high and anything below that as being low. Responses from all the questionnaire indicated that computer resources are not available in secondary schools and the schools lack qualify teachers to teach Data processing as a subject, teachers show positive attitude towards the implementation of Data Processing Curriculum. The study also reviewed those things that must be put in place to ensure Data Processing curriculum is fully implemented in secondary schools in Ondo State. Two null hypotheses were generated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. It was revealed that availability of computer resources and availability of Data Processing (DP) Subject teachers had no significant influence on attitude of teacher toward the implementation of Data Processing Curriculum .
  • Organising Subject Material In Accordance With Ubiquitous Student Status
    Anandi Giridharan 1 , Pallapa Venkataram 2 , Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore-12, India 1,2 .
    ABSTRACT
Ubiquitous learning allows students to learn at any time and any place. This educational activity is possible to be performed by various types of students and to operate on various devices, networks and environments, where the system understands the study pattern and behaviour of the students. Adaptivity plays an important role in Ubiquitous learning, aiming at providing students with adaptive and personalized learning material and information at the right place and the right time. Student's history logs is automatically created and maintained by the student history database that maintains student's history of subject content requested. This offers information on student's hardware capabilities, students preferences, knowledge level and student status. This information can be utilized to respond to new student's request with subject content created from previous similar request. A Ubiquitous learning student model aims to identify students needs, characteristics and situations. We use C-IOB (Context-Information, Observation and Belief) model to process the context of the student, formulate the observation and use the observations to generate beliefs. The belief generated by C-IOB model is based on adaptation decision and subject analysis from student history database, which are able to detect the real-world learning status of students. Designed method has been illustrated for students with divergent knowledge levels, by considering complete course material of a subject, Communication Protocols offered at graduate level.
  • Parenting Parents: The impact of parental involvement in sustaining Bilingual education programmes in semi urban schools
D Yvonne S Samarawickarama, Sri Lanka
    ABSTRACT
In the Sri Lankan context, bilingual education was not a new concept but a very old one that was used in the past for dhamma dissemination. However, in the education system of the country, bilingual education was started in the year 2001 by the ministry of education. It was under the “national amity school project” aiming the social cohesion which is a necessity in the country. There in this new beginning, English was used as the medium of instruction with related to some selected subjects. As the English medium created a gap between the English speakers and non-English speakers, this bilingual education came in to being as an alternative model replaced as a remedial measure to inculcate cultural values and tolerant towards cultural diversity. The number of schools that has the bilingual education in them in the system, records a small percentage. One of the factors that causes this small percentage is parental resistance to this prgramme .The objective of this paper is to study the impact of parental involvement in sustaining bilingual education programme in semi urban areas where exposure to the additional language English, in bilingual education, is minimal. Epstein’s 6 fold framework on parent involvement was the model adapted in organizing parent involvement programmes. Parenting, communicating and decision making illustrated in the model were adapted in parent involvement programmes. Focused group discussions is one of the strategies used in awareness programmes. A gradual increase in the number of bilingual pupils in bilingual classes was evident as an outcome of the programme. .
